ABSTRACT

Women labourers from the Pyrenees are important for understanding the engineering heritage in the Canal du Midi. They carried knowledge of Roman hydraulics to the canal from areas near former Roman bath colonies. This heritage of Pyreneans hydraulics is not made apparent to visitors the canal, but it easily could be. The Canal du Midi is endowed with lavoirs or public laundries like ones at the centre of most Pyrenean town systems. Some of the lavoirs on the canal could be used to note more fully the participation of women labourers and evoke the indigenous traditions from which they worked.
