ABSTRACT

Most other chapters in this book address topics relating to pilot mental health assessment and screening from a theoretical, conceptual or empirical base. This chapter departs from these underpinnings and orientations, and instead offers a practical perspective to pilot assessments, with an emphasis on the clinical interview and mental state assessment. As the book evolved and developed, and during the course of many liaison and consultation meetings with fellow colleagues in aviation medicine, clinical and aviation psychology, human resources managers in airlines and with aviation regulators, it became increasingly clear to us that some guidance on how to develop the clinical interview with pilots in the course of assessments was sought. This chapter endeavours to offer this.
