ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the history of Singapore’s education policy and system and discusses the key issues of student internships and industry attachments faced by the tertiary institutions in Singapore. In particular, the aim of this chapter is to explore the benefits of undergraduate student internships and industry attachment programmes offered by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and identifies the key challenges to consider. Evidence from the university shows a significant increase in the number of students participating in internships in the recent years. This number continues to increase as students benefit from relevant work experience from internships and industry attachment programmes and many receive job offers while doing their internship. Through this structured work experience, NTU students have opportunities to engage in a real work environment, develop technical domain expertise, and transition more naturally from study to work.
