ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter summarizes the empirical results, pointing to the main contributions to social science literature on civil war, democratization, nonviolent rebellions, and social movements. In particular, taking as a point of departure causal mechanisms that have been singled out in research on clandestine political violence, our case studies point to some common mechanisms of radicalization into political violence in general, but also at the need to specify them when looking at the development of civil wars. The concluding chapter will close by acknowledging the limitations of the research and indicating moves forward.
