ABSTRACT

This chapter lays out our framework for analyzing the role of legitimacy in peacemaking and peacebuilding across the cases. It examines the various possible bases for legitimacy and discusses the different sources – international, national, and local – that can provide combatants, as well as peace-builders, with some kind of right to ask for support or require obedience. The framework helps to provide the different chapters that follow with concepts and ideas that help to link together ostensibly disparate situations and circumstances.
