ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the question of how to work with a sole, main participant for a study. The study I am drawing on (Khan, 2013) involved W, a Yemeni migrant. It focused on the period when he was becoming a UK citizen. W’s participation was one component in an overall research design and datacollection process. The chapter discusses the research design (and associated practicalities) with reference to an underlying philosophical foundation based on Foucault’s “polyhedron of intelligibility” (Foucault, 1991). I show how it was necessary to manage each aspect of the research process separately while also aiming to achieve overall coherence.
