ABSTRACT

The Community Health Councils, Inc. (CHC, Inc.) is a non-profit community-based, consumer-oriented health advocacy, education, and resource development organization. Established in response to the 1992 civil unrest in Los Angeles, CHC, Inc. strives to increase access to quality healthcare and improve the health status of uninsured, underinsured, and economically disadvantaged communities. This is accomplished through coalition building at the local and state level, consumer education, technical assistance training, and policy and leadership forums for community-based organizations. With deep roots in South Los Angelesformerly South Central Los Angeles, but renamed in April 2003 with a Los Angeles City Council vote-CHC has responded to decades of neglect in the community through a concentrated focus on residents’ health and the need for more health-supportive environments.
