ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role that procedural justice policing can play in promoting public trust in police. It also examines whether procedural justice policing is effective in promoting trust in police in Australia's diverse population, and whether procedural justice works effectively for those who feel a lower sense of 'belonging' in society. 'Policing has always been implicated in processes of social inclusion and exclusion'. Hence, the chapter explores whether feelings of 'group belongingness' can be influenced by procedural justice policing and, importantly, whether it can moderate the effect of procedural justice on citizens' trust in police. Australia has seven state police forces and one federal police force that also provides policing services to the Australian Capital Territory. The Uncertainty Management Model proposes that procedurally fair treatment will be more salient to people who feel uncertain about their status within groups or how they will be treated by group authorities.
