ABSTRACT

The term sign language literature may be used to describe sign language stories, poems, jokes, games, and other culturally valued sign language art-forms. This chapter considers the role that sign language literature can play in the learning experience of L2/Ln learners. In the light of the paucity of studies on the use and effectiveness of literature in language teaching in the sign language context, we present research on the role of literature in other L2/Ln teaching and learning, with suggestions for how it may work in sign language contexts. Theoretical perspectives that categorize and explain the teaching of literature are illustrated with examples of pedagogical practices. The chapter ends with suggestions for future research and practice.
