ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the role of L2/Ln signed language in the teaching of signed language interpreters. It focuses on two considerations in the role of signed languages in interpreter education. One is the teaching of the L2/Ln language itself and to learners of interpretation. The other is the use of L2/Ln signed language as the language of instruction when teaching interpreting to learners. They occur simultaneously with the teaching of cognitive, professional, and other aspects of interpretation, and take into consideration the timing and methodology of instruction. Future pedagogical practices in interpretation and interpreter education need to be research-driven and evidence-based.
