ABSTRACT

Before breakfast the girls are subjected to very little restraint, and usually indulge themselves in the luxury of sitting in native fashion on a low stool or on the gr(}und. At first it is a trial to women who habitually lounge as though they had no back-bones, to have to sit straight and upright. It is a great innovation for Bengali women to use tables and spoons and forks. This last is considered such a great change that no girl is allowed to use a spoon or fork without the written permission of her guardian. Fortunately all our girls were anxious to learn to eat with other tools than their fingere. Our girls eat meat and fish, but in small quantities, compared with the rice and vegetables they take. The girls. like English school girls, ha.ve in turn various mopitor's duties-they cook, they dust. and arrange the class-rooms for lessons: they prepare the table for luncheon, and wash all the glasses, plates, &c., used at that meal; they also polish the spoons and forks, singing or chatting the while.
