ABSTRACT

The following account of his escape and losses was given to me by Bahu Uma Charan "Baneljea., deputy magistrate of the island (Dakhin Shahbazphr). on the" night of the storm he and his wife and family were in the Su~Divisional Buildings. With them, after the hurricane began, were sheltering some hundred other persons, amongst them a number of "manJhis" (boatmen), whose boats had been destroyed m the earl)'" part of the storm. They expected that the bore would be unusually high in consequence of the violent windp and prepared for.it by piling up tak-ta-poshes (eo kind
