ABSTRACT

One of the greatest women that our generation has known, an able writer, a deep thinker, a warm-heartE'd philanthropist, has gone from us. At the age of seventylour Harriet Martineau has passed away. When she was in the zenith of her fame, few English writers, certainly no other woman, exercised so great an influence on public opinion. We have had many writers of more genius, but none perhaps have excelled her in the power of clearly putting before her readers, what she believed to be the truth. Her talent lay in her simple unexaggerated stlle, her practical clearheadednese~ her uusweloving mtegrity, her intense sympathy with all that appertained to progress, even though she might incur obloquy and danger in maintaining it, and her enormous ca.pacity for work .
