ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the synergies and untapped potential interactions between human rights (HR) and conflict resolution (CR). It provides a critical exploration of the transformative potential of human rights on conflict resolution efforts and explores how a multidimensional approach to human rights can effectively contribute to improving the design and outcomes of conflict resolution efforts. The book offers a critical inquiry into the UN's longstanding promotion of HR in conflict resolution settings. It looks at the interplay between HR and CR by zooming in on the national level and examines how the Brazilian National Truth Commission revisited gross human rights violations perpetrated during the military dictatorship while also recognizing a continuum of violence connecting impunity for past crimes with the persistence of human rights violations after redemocratization.
