ABSTRACT

While the development of unmanned aircraft has largely kept pace with the development of conventionally piloted aircraft, the same cannot be said about the development of the regulatory regime for both types. The development of regulations for manned aircraft followed reasonably closely after the develop - ment of the airplane, particularly in countries that were involved with aircraft manufacturing, i.e. the USA and the UK. It is however quite surprising that to date, the USA has only just published its regulation on UAS and the UK does not yet have regulations for unmanned aircraft. The first country to publish an unmanned aircraft regulation was Australia, which occurred in 2002 in the form of Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 101.
