ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author develops a taxonomic system for situating work in the nascent field of geomedia. The taxonomy organizes the field into four quadrants separated by the classic geographical distinction between space and place, and an orthogonal division between media as containers and media as contents. The taxonomy embodied in the diagram provides a rough map of the ontologies and epistemologies employed in geomedia studies. Encapsulating ontologies as the things we know and epistemologies as the ways we go about gaining such knowledge, the quadrant diagram maps geomedia's key ontologies and epistemologies. The author suspects that if the quadrant diagram is to be useful we have to be ready to transcend it and move into new epistemological and ontological terrain. Particular research indicates lines of investigation that do exactly this, moving perpendicular to the diagram's grid or into another dimensionality altogether.
