ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of select, major, nationwide education initiatives that have been developed to support students from migrant farmworker backgrounds and their families. It describes the objectives and scope of a range of programs and discusses unique and shared characteristics of the programs with implications for educational policy and practice. The chapter discusses the considerations for special populations of migrant students, such as those with disabilities and English Language Learners. It discusses that profile select university centers and institutes focusing on education-related research, policy, and services for migrant students and their families and offer recommendations for future directions. The Migrant Education Program funds support “high quality education programs for migratory children and help ensure that migratory children who move among the states are not penalized in any manner by disparities among states in curriculum or state academic content and student academic achievement standards”. The English Language Acquisition program was known by its legislative nomenclature, the Bilingual Education Act.
