ABSTRACT

Rock art research around the world has been in the throes of a major revolution since the second edition of Prehistoric Hunters of the High Plains was published in 1991. By way of comparison, at least eight articles in American Antiquity and 20 articles in Plains Anthropologist published since 1991 have focused on rock art or have used rock art to address other research questions of archaeological interest. Wyoming rock art now chronicles a spectacular record of cultural diversity and change among hunting and gathering peoples living in the Northwestern Plains and Rocky Mountains for thousands of years and provides new insights into native spiritual and religious practice and land use.
