ABSTRACT
One of the most important fields in Peru developed in the first decade of the twenty-first century is archaeological heritage management. Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) clearly took over the leadership of Peruvian archaeology in the twenty-first century. The PUCP has a very long humanist intellectual tradition and has been very influential in Peruvian national life. It is also one of the few universities with a vibrant archaeology program. Careers in cultural heritage management have been formalized in some institutions, with universities offering a certificate in cultural patrimony that accompanies the licenciatura. Matos Mendieta has called the "Sipan syndrome". Such an approach demonstrates a successful outcome of public relations, particularly with the local communities. The American presence in Peru during the twentieth century is evident by the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) annual meetings, where American researchers discuss the progress and results of their Peruvian research.
