ABSTRACT

Museums and technology change at very different speeds. Change in museums, for both good and bad reasons, tends to come more slowly. Museums need to acknowledge that there are huge differences in pacing when working with technology, and determine appropriate ways to adapt to the accelerated rate of change. Three worth looking at are Museums and the Web, AAM's Museums and Technology, and the Museum computer network, all of which have websites and meetings. One way to approach technology is to think of it all as a big game with rules and strategies. Strategies suggest how to play the game within these rules. The two rules are: digital communication is fully integrated into society, and that technology is ever changing, and the change is rapid, accelerating, and relentless. Part of becoming successful with technology is learning how to prototype to find the weak spots and areas that need adjustment.
