The trend of modern industrialized, democratic, capitalist culture has been defi nitely toward a structural distinction between church and state, and toward the political ascendancy of the secular arm of the statechurch. Despite this structural differentiation, state and church may still be regarded as a single, though bifurcated, mechanism. Its functions still remain those of integration, regulation, and control of the social organism.
