ABSTRACT

This paper has a single purpose expressed through two aims. The purpose is to address concerns that two scholars have put recently in print (Brown 1995; Schofield 1995b) about the seeming minimal value of lithic scatters to other archaeological studies of prehistoric society. What was the nature of working stone in prehistoric society, or how do lithic scatters represent prehistoric society? The question was repeatedly valid while gathering data for the Scottish Lithic Scatters Project (slp), hence one aim is to briefly introduce the slp and the other is to discuss lithic scatters as social products.
