ABSTRACT

As is so often the case with grassroots groups, we started in a burst of enthusiasm, indignation, and hubris. We were going to whip out criteria that would reform how awards were awarded: a research-based, mathematical construct that would allow judges in different cities to rate different exhibitions fairly and to a common standard. Our hubris was tempered only by a sense of humor. At first it was a joke: If we were going to judge excellence in exhibitions, we should call ourselves the Excellent Judges. Unfortunately, no one came up with a real name that we could agree on, so we actually made Excellent Judges our working title–EJ for short.
