ABSTRACT
By thus underrepresenting the number of native people, as well as denying their early and continuing presence, Berkshire County's historians argued that their colonial ancestors settled lands only sparsely occupied and scarcely used. And because there were so few Mahican Indians living there in the early eighteenth century, or so they argued, the effects of colonial settlement on native people were assumed to have been both negligible and short-lived.
