ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the current status of forensic anthropology in Indonesia, including education, and then discusses research and case applications that have contributed to the historical development of this field in that region. It explains the training opportunities in forensic anthropology, and various forensic anthropological cases in Indonesia are described in order to contribute to the body of knowledge of casework from different parts of the world. The role of forensic anthropology in disaster victim identification (DVI) is discussed in light of the numerous disasters that have affected Indonesia over the last ten years. In Indonesia forensic anthropology is utilized when the contributions that forensic anthropology can make to cases are understood by forensic pathologists, forensic dentists, and police. Thus, forensic anthropology in Indonesia has generally been viewed as assisting with the identification of human skeletal remains, a specific application that requires the teamwork of forensic pathologists, police, forensic odontologists, and molecular biologists.
