ABSTRACT

1973: It was a snowy spring day in Washington D,C. as elementary school teachers sloshed their way to the Renwick Gallery for a workshop called "Food, Fun and Field Trips." A newly formed coalition of museum educators, the Museum Education Roundtable (MER), organized the day's workshop to help teachers create stronger field trips with more direct museum-classroom connections. Together the participants brainstormed pre-visit activities, shared expectations about what makes for engaging field trips, and offered suggestions for how to create the best lessons for students in both museum and school contexts. Documented in the very first issue of MER's periodic newsletter, Roundtable Reports, we have a rare snapshot of the everyday lives of museum educators during this period.
