African Agricultural Tools: Implications of Synchronic Ethnography for Agrarian History

A lthough the last few years have seen consider-able advances in African archaeobotany, so that we now have a broader picture of the evolution of African agriculture from the point of view of crops, our understanding of the techniques informing that agriculture remains poor. Although Africa has a rich diversity of agricultural tools, they are known principally from synchronic descriptions rather than excavation.
