ABSTRACT

Milliken won an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. This fellowship program gave her an opportunity to work in the federal government as a postdoctoral fellow, and she ended up in the science and technology division of one of the large federal agencies. Lately she has found it more authentic to identify herself as a social scientist with a degree in anthropology. The anthropology community is distrustful of the federal government, especially the national security agencies and the military services. Many people in the national security agencies and the military recognize the importance of culture and have been reaching out to anthropologists for the past several years. Anthropologists, like many other social scientists, are bound by a professional ethical code to do no harm and to consider the potential negative consequences of our research efforts.
