ABSTRACT

The study of culture in the military context, however, is the subject of Fujimura's present research and publication, and she has examined the role of anthropology in military education. Since psychology was just being accepted as potentially helpful in the military and anthropology was not, she was advised to and ultimately did teach the course under the title "The Psychology of World Cultures". In adopting anthropology, the academy also inevitably changes as midshipmen and officers come to discover its potential vitality in the military context. Traditional goals of the Academy are continuously challenged and adapting to meet the demands of the times. Acknowledging the dilemmas involved in author role as both anthropologist and participant in a naval education and training facility was at the very least a first step in uncovering the motivations, contradictions, and complexity of the US military.
