ABSTRACT

Of all encounters with Ancient Egypt, some of the most interesting are encounters with Egyptian religion. One important context for such encounters is pilgrimage. Some people argue that ‘pilgrimage’ is a medieval and modern category, difficult to transplant from the context of the salvation religions Christianity and Islam. I use pilgrimage in the broader sense of travel to a sacred place for a sacred reason (e.g. Bhardwaj 1973; Cohen 1992; Morinis 1992).
