ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the various types of implements and the potential benefits that can be derived from implement training. The majority of any training program should be based on what sports science has determined to be the best approach to achieving the desired goal. Limited research has been conducted evaluating the effectiveness of training with non-standard equipment, such as tires, logs, kegs, and stones and similar, for lack of a better term, strongman type implements. The chapter describes the potential negative aspects of implement training and explains how implement training can be integrated into an athletic training program. Horizontal training movement patterns are not the norm in most traditional strength training exercises, such as cleans squats, and bench press. The implement training method that theoretically seems as if it could be of value in the training programs of certain types of athletes is the use of water-filled implements. The chapter provides the safety precautions required when training with implements.
