ABSTRACT

This chapter employs the concept of 'sociotechnical imaginaries' in a textual analysis of advocacy material and qualitative interviews with key actors in the debate about the risks of genetically modified (GM) crops in India and Europe. It explains the competing and conflicting imaginaries by linking them back to the actor's different interpretations of the past and how these relate to the present. The chapter explores how author mobilizes the concept of 'sociotechnical imaginaries' for his/her analysis. It presents a description of the sociotechnical imaginaries that identified for the proponents and opponents of GM crops in the debate in India and Europe. The chapter shows that the controversy is a normative struggle that finds expression in competing, conflicting and contested futures. It concludes with reflections on how to understand the debate about GM crops and its risks on the one hand, and conceptual implications about imaginaries on the other.
