ABSTRACT

A collaborative leadership model is defined as one that is: focused on developing leaders that are able to build a shared vision within a group/organisation, and who facilitate the distribution of leadership processes according to the groups expertise, as well as act as a catalyst for shared decision making and collective actions. The collaborative leadership model is focused on developing leaders who are able to build a shared vision within a group, department or organisation and who facilitate the distribution of leadership processes to the group according to the group members' expertise. The hospital quality improvement collaborative was inspired by the American Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) collaborative model for achieving Breakthrough Improvement. Its aims are to "improve healthcare by supporting change, though collaborative learning". The continuous quality improvement collaborative (CQIC) aimed to develop wide-scale engagement and participation across all staff groups, managers and patients in a large emergency department in a busy teaching hospital.
