ABSTRACT
During the early modern period, the word ‘emotion’ focused on violence and disruptive motion (including political movements and migration). It was a disorderly, extreme and physical more than psychic quality. By examining its etymology and entry into the English language, we gain a better understanding of the term’s initial meaning and ongoing impact.
