ABSTRACT

Space embodies an interlinkage of the built environment, meanings, and life routines. In this chapter, we point out that the urban planning profession shares very similar expectations with the WHO AFC movement, creating a friendly environment for all ages in the modern world. From the urban planning academia perspective, we further review urban planning theory and its transformation of focus in recent years. Although the AFC movement and well-being urban planning seem to take different paths, one from the perspective of public health and one from the perspective of physical environment improvement, we realize that these two paths can meet seamlessly through collaboration. We also urge the need of considering age-friendly planning as a new urban agenda and as a restatement of the true essence of the planning system. In this chapter, four spatial scales are discussed systematically: nation, region (rural), city, and community, and we believe that with different planning tools we can propose more proactive age-friendly urban planning.
