ABSTRACT

In this chapter I recount a session that I taught to a class of Western karate practitioners in which I adopted an athlete-centred approach that reflects the features of Positive Pedagogy. I spent over thirty years training in karate, earned a living as a karate instructor in Australia for eight years and trained for six years in Japan where I earned a fifth dan in the Hayashi Ha Shito-Ryu-Kai system. The session I recount here was focused on improving the reverse punch (gyakuzuki) when attacking a moving target and reflects many of the features of Positive Pedagogy. It is strongly influenced by my engagement in karate for over thirty years with my six years in Japan being the most influential.
