ABSTRACT

The way a family structures its different business interests can be described as an ownership-company pattern. The immediate association one usually has with family businesses is a one-business-one family pattern. A typical family venture is united by either personal and/or shared goals that are similar to the passions evoked by their children or spouses. The venture gives the family member(s) meaning and provides for them a sense of purpose that guides their decisions and choices (Lansberg, 1999). Existing literature suggests that at least half, if not considerably more, of the family businesses fall into this category (Ucbasaran et al., 2008). However, the study of family businesses is connected to a growing interest in entrepreneurship that is involved in more than one venture.
