ABSTRACT

Teachers and other out-of-school educators will be instrumental to imagining, building and continuously adapting these new learning ecosystems. They must be empowered themselves to empower young people – an idea that is in direct opposition to what many regard as a systematic disempowerment of teachers sweeping the world – and a major challenge where teacher shortages are chronic. Around the world, teachers and other change leaders are organising themselves with the explicit goal of empowering teachers to empower young people to strive for universal wellbeing. Living for the common good is a way of being in the world. In shifting mind sets and mechanisms, teachers must take a lead role. Classrooms, subjects and timetables will be more flexible; young people will have a greater voice in the system; parents will be engaged; and provide empowering learning journeys to their students; policies will create time, space and incentives for empowering experiences.
