ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the path to the mainstream acceptance of sex toys. It traces the emergent technological developments inherent in teledildonics which are helping us to produce devices which can replicate most if not all sexual functions and "aim at heightened experience of pleasure, an experience that would not be possible without help of technology". The perceived role of sex toys in expanding sexual horizons goes beyond merely sexual and inculcates our behaviour in other social settings and impacts upon the ways in which we view society in a post-industrial, digital age. Even sex toys are potentially a practical illustration of the gap between the haves and the have nots, a further more intimate example of inequality. The chapter investigates future notions of post/human sex, which are often characterised as a step too far. However, due to the pace of technological advances the gap between the present and the future is shrinking and holds tantalising possibilities for sexual fulfilment.
