ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how and why the Persona Doll approach provides an effective, stimulating and non-threatening way to combat discrimination, empowers young children and promotes social justice. It explores how Persona Dolls and their stories can sensitively and effectively challenge children's assumptions, misconceptions, stereotypical thinking and feelings of superiority. The chapter expresses that children need to be able to build a deep sense of self-worth and clarity in their cultural identities in order to be proud of where they come from. The Persona Doll approach is an interactive learning approach designed to develop communication, listening and critical thinking skills. The appearance of the dolls, and the fact that their imaginary lives and experiences reflect those of the children, contributes to this transformation. The dolls and the stories offer a stimulating and fun way to raise equality issues without preaching or pointing fingers.
