ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role of environments and spaces in the education of young children in Pistoia's early years centres. Pistoia is a city which, along with some other cities in Italy, has pioneered a system of early childhood education that has become known worldwide. The advisory team responsible for the 'pedagogic coordination' of early years practice in all the city's 'nidi' and 'scuole d'infanzia' is led by two coordinators, one of whom is Donatella Giovannini, who has been working in the system since its inception. The architecture and the planning of the spaces also allows for peaceful small corners, and for settings that encourage dramatic play. There are rich displays everywhere, and there is a strong emphasis on documentation, featuring large photographic wall displays, with commentaries on children's activities and on recent projects.
