ABSTRACT

Participatory approaches using digital resources to listen to young children's voices and perspectives have become more significant as children are increasingly seen as 'experts in their own lives'. This chapter introduces the beginnings of conversations and reflections from a small exploratory project in a day nursery in the South East of England. Participatory photography supports children in creating and documenting their own powerful learning stories. The chapter draws on approaches used by the charitable organisation PhotoVoice. The use of photovoice has the capacity to stimulate dialogue for change, as well as children developing their own stories and knowing those of others. Photovoice has potential for inclusive practice, though the use of a camera as a participatory tool for engaging young children is not unproblematic. Digital technologies act as a mediator or shared resource helping adults, in inclusive practice, to slow down and listen, to draw the invisible lines and make connections within and between all children's everyday moments and stories.
