ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the ways in which hacerle la lucha acts as a form of funds of knowledge (FK) in the pre-college context of students' homes, and how such funds of knowledge are transformed into other forms of capital on campus to promote persistence. It aims to increase understanding of the college experience of undocumented students in the under-examined context of private colleges and universities. The chapter expands the literature on undocumented students by focusing on the success of undocumented students and analyzing their experience in the context of private colleges, which has remained unexplored in research. It contributes to the application of funds of knowledge as a conceptual framework that can be used to examine student-strengths in higher education. The present narrative analysis focuses—in greater detail—on the development and application of hacerle la lucha as funds of knowledge, a theme that emerged from the original qualitative study.
