ABSTRACT

Migration has always been such a major human activity in the Bhojpuri region that it has become the foundational element of the culture of that society. If one were to analyse the culture of the Bundelkhand and Braj regions, one would find that the basis of this culture is the migration of Lord Krishna from Mathura to Dwarka. In the colonial period when the mass migration from the Bhojpuri region took place to various countries across the globe like Mauritius, Suriname, Guyana and Fiji, the migrants took with them their folk culture. Biraha is the best folk composition of social harmony, which has been linked with Lord Krishna since the ancient period, and has been kept alive mainly by the Yadavs of the Hindi-speaking region of North India. As an oral folk culture biraha has been passed down over generations since the ancient period. In the Allahabadi style the biraha singers also use nagara while singing.
