ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the experiences of women elite leaders through a postfeminist lens by revisiting recent empirical studies. It illustrates postfeminism as a 'property' that surfaces issues of surveillance, makeover, transformation and choice. The chapter draws upon a postfeminist lens to explore recent theorising of women elite leaders' experiences. It explores the question, how does postfeminism play out for women at the top of UK organisational hierarchies? The chapter provides an overview of postfeminism to ground postfeminist reading and introduces women elite leaders who can be perceived as postfeminists who undermine 'true' feminist theory and practice. The chapter overviews the empirical research that informs published studies and progress to critically re-read the work through a postfeminist analysis. It focuses on three themes informed by existing postfeminism theory—namely, double entanglements, choice and body-care and offers insights into the possibilities for feminist research that provides space to hear and learn from women elite leaders.
