ABSTRACT

Other chronologies of Bach’s life can be found elsewhere. On the one hand, there are the briefer accounts in NBR, xli-lii, and Wolff, Bach, The Learned Musician, 525-534, and, on the other hand, there are the more detailed chronologies of Dok 5, 1-45, and Kalendarium zur Lebensgeschichte Johann Sebastian Bachs, ed. Andreas Glöckner (Leipzig: Evangelische Verlagsanstalt, 2008, effectively the third edition of the work first issued in 1970). This latter has formed the basis of what is presented here, but with some abbreviation and revision. Not included in this chronology are many payments for services rendered, and the regular installments of income from various sources. Also missing are most of Bach’s testimonials for pupils, and others, though a few are recorded. Similarly, not every occasion when Bach stood as godparent will be found here. Some of the information in the Kalendarium has been revised to take account of the sources that have been discovered since that work was committed to the press, information that has subsequently appeared in issues of BJ.
