ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the impact of loss on the older person. The primary research findings upon which the discussion here is drawn come from the first nation-wide 2009 study which mapped how 31 arts therapists work with people who have dementia. Findings are considered in relation to case examples from the author’s own clinical practice in art therapy. The chapter illustrates how therapeutic relationship, transference and countertransference, adapting work to the unique needs of the clients and negotiating directive versus non-directive work, are some key principles in working with this client population.
