ABSTRACT

The self-determination of women and girls is a basic objective of development-based measures. There is little research focusing on women and football in the Sport for Development and Peace sector. Research topics range from sponsorship and violence to career opportunities for elite players. The issue of gender is featured largely in the history of development policy. In many countries around the world, the constitution bans all forms of discrimination and safeguards gender equity. In most countries, Ministries of Gender Equality and Child Welfare have been established and a National Gender Policy is available in local languages. Although many countries around the globe have adopted modern constitutions which guarantee equal rights, day-to-day life is governed mainly by traditional laws. There are a number of approaches that can be taken regarding the potential sport has for accomplishing gender-specific development goals.
