ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out a range of issues in questionnaire design and issues in educational research, including: ethical issues; planning and operationalization; conducting and reporting questionnaires; operationalizing questionnaires; kinds of questionnaire (e.g. structured, semi-structured, unstructured); types of questionnaire items and questions (open and closed, dichotomous, multiple choice, rank ordering, rating scales, constant sum, ratio data, matrix questions, and when to use the different types); scales of data and planning with data analysis in mind; asking sensitive questions; skip, filter and branching questionnaires and how to work with them; sequencing questions; questionnaire layout; avoiding dangers and pitfalls in questionnaires and questions; piloting; administering and self-administering; processing data. The chapter provides very practical advice on questionnaire construction, distribution and analysis, together with challenges and how to address them.
