ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out key considerations in choosing a research project, including: how to choose a research project; sources of inspiration for a research topic; ensuring that the research is worthwhile and important; clarifying the purposes of the research; ensuring the feasibility and practicability of the research; research questions; and the importance of the literature review. It offers practical advice to researchers in choosing and planning the research topic, to ensure that they approach a research topic with caution, going into it ‘with their eyes open’, aware of its possible pitfalls as well as its benefits and implications. Considerations have to be given to the size and scope of the research, its implications for time, manageability, practicability and decision making, and the need for researchers to consider how to ensure that justice is done to the topic in the time and resources available.
